Gujarati play to be staged today

The Gujarati play follows ARS's pioneering and successful attempt of bringing the first-ever Kannada theatre event to the UAE last month. Written by Shailesh Dave and directed by Kamlesh Mota, Olkhaan - Kaanch... features veteran Gujarati theatre artists including Apara Mehta of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi fame, Darshan Jhariwalla, the indomitable actor whose performance as Gandhi in Mahatma Versus Gandhi won rave reviews, and Arvind Vekaria, theatre, film and television artiste. Other members of the cast include Babul Bhavsar, Mallika Shah, Alpesh Jhaveri, Tanmay Vekaria, Amit Raut and Tejal.

"Olkhaan - Kaanch... is humorous play about the serious issue of extra-marital affairs. It is about how a husband and wife deal with one another in resolving their disputes and though the treatment is light, everyone will be able to relate to the characters," Mr Mota said. Replying to a question, Mr Jhariwala noted that most theatre-goers have doled out loud, slapstick comedies in the name of light theatre, but Olkhaan - Kaanch... is a refined play. "This play is very close to life and carries a social message sugar-coated with subtle humour," he said.
