Domestic AbuseRefugee CrisisA self-declared feminist from the age of seven, Onjali specialised in Women’s Studies at Oxford University before working in a number of human rights charities. In her aunt was murdered by the husband she had been trying to escape from for over five years, highlighting the systematic failures around the constant abuse and murders of women in the United Kingdom. Determined to do something in memory of her aunt, Onjali set up Making Herstory. Today, Making Herstory has a network of active supporters across the UK and beyond. Working with agencies large and small, it works to mobilise men, women and children from all walks of life to support women&#;s shelters, lobby for women&#;s rights and join anti-trafficking movements. Onjali Qatara RaúfMBE (born February [1]) is a British author and the founder of the two NGOs: Making Herstory,[2] a woman's rights organisation tackling the abuse and trafficking of women and girls in the UK; and O's Refugee Aid Team, which raises awareness and funds to support refugee frontline aid organisations.[3]
Background
[edit]Raúf is of British Bangladeshi heritage. Her work is informed in part by her experiences of racism in childhood. "When I started being called Paki, I started to feel [my difference]. I wondered: why is there no one who looks like me in the books? So I wanted to write those characters,” she said in a interview with The Guardian.[4] Raúf was raised in London.
Career
